Flow

FLOW is a culmination of artists’ creative and artistic experiences. Based on the concept of Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi, “Flow”, it is a high state of concentration where one is highly engaged in a particular activity that nothing else seems to matter. FLOW is highly reflective of artists’ improvisational processes where we are often focused on a particular durational moment in the process of improvisational creation, whether during rehearsals or performances.

First presented in November 2016, FLOW demonstrated SA’s collective experiences and artistry as improvisers. Through experimentation, extended techniques and musical conversations, the artists explored different mediums in which sound could be delivered with physical gestures through their instruments.

FLOW is a highly versatile programme and may be presented in a myriad of combinations, transcending boundaries, disciplines through being in the same moment.

“One of the things I learned from improvising is that all of life is an improvisation, whether you like it or not. Some of the greatest scientific discoveries of the 20th century came out of people dropping things.” – Alan Arkin
